University of louisville spring football game 2013

I think you saw the one on social media where Mitch Hall snapped it to a wide receiver. It's good to see a lot of young guys made plays throughout the spring and got better from the start to the end. While Satterfield said his team made a lot of key strides during spring ball, the Cardinals are still not where he wants them to be. Louisville will open the season on Sept. We'll use that time to keep learning and grow as a football team, we just won't be able to use a football now.

But we'll be able to do a lot of things within our team to finish out the semester. You get to see the first-team offense score a bunch of points on the second-team defense, so you never get a real gauge of what the offense will do during the regular season. More background: Louisville spring football starts Feb. Louisville will still be holding an open practice for the fans and media, including a scrimmage, so people will still get a sneak peek of the new offense and defense.

The big picture? Fans will get the chance to meet coaches and the team and get a glimpse of what they will look like during the spring, but they will not need an official game to do that. Trust me — a spring football game won't be preparing the Cardinals for Clemson, Notre Dame, Syracuse or rival Kentucky. In the Virginia, Syracuse, and Boston College games, Vance played in the third-down 'nickel' package and last season U of L coach Scott Satterfield said he was a guy "we really want to get some more snaps" as the year went on.

The 6-foot-4, pound Diaby was a starter from day one with the Cardinals. He returned against Syracuse and had one tackle and then four tackles, including a tackle for a loss, against Boston College. But since the end of the season, U of L defensive line coach Mark Ivey said he's put on about 18 pounds of muscle and was a "bright spot" during spring ball.

The skinny: Diaby wasn't bad last season but I expect him to make a major jump next fall. Yasir Abdullah has always been a very talented guy with a bright future in the Bryan Brown system. The 6-foot-1, pound Abdullah has made 15 starts in 35 career games during his career and got better and better as the season went on.

He had 25 of his total 33 tackles in the final six games of the season. Abdullah looked so much better in the final few games, and he continued that trajectory in spring ball.

Abdullah was not a surprise in spring ball but he made an improvement. Perhaps the most talked-about player - certainly among the newcomers - during spring ball was true freshmen defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte. The 6-foot-3, pound Gillotte received rave reviews from the coaches and his fellow teammates.

He's coming along very, very nicely. His athletic ability is going to take him a long way. The skinny: Gillotte will see snaps and he will see them early and often; expect him to be one of the first newcomers on the field.
